In a move that combines financial support with a clear warning, the United States has vowed $2 billion to support UN humanitarian operations. But, this contribution was accompanied by a stark warning for the international body: it must "adapt or die."
This commitment was made against a backdrop of major cuts in US funding for global aid. Further cuts are also anticipated from other key donors such as European nations. The US representative, a senior Trump administration figure, made the statement alongside the UN's top humanitarian official.
"This money will help save millions of lives," affirmed the UN's relief coordinator. Yet, the $2 billion constitutes just a small portion of the United States' historical contributions, which previously totaled around $17 billion just a few years ago.
This new US funding is not unconditional. The money is focused on just 17 countries, including Syria, Sudan, and Haiti. Notably, Yemen and Afghanistan have been excluded.
The representative explained this decision by pointing to concerns that there, UN funds were being diverted to militant groups. "The President will not allow any amount of public funds going to terrorist groups," he stated firmly.
Additionally, the restrictions explicitly rule out funding for initiatives related to tackling global warming, which were described as not "life saving" and not in "American interests."

The relief coordinator and UN officials say they full agreement for these principles, noting that wise spending is in everyone's interest, especially the estimated 200 million people caught in crises.
While the UN has accepted the new funds, major concerns persist regarding if these stipulations are too politicized. The core principles of impartial assistance – being neutral, impartial, and directed to the most needy – are challenged by eliminating specific countries or issues like climate change.
The consequences of reduced aid is already being felt. Reports indicate shutdowns of maternal health centers in one excluded country and cut nutritional support for displaced people in another nation. Worldwide, a long period of improvement, child mortality rates are set to rise this year.
