Beginning in 2018, Tabletop Vacations has been organizing deeply engaging experiences where expert DMs lead Dungeons & Dragons games in ancient fortresses in the UK and at an American castle venue. The full-service getaways are highly favored among long-time dungeon masters who seldom have the moment to actually play themselves, and they often seek advice from seasoned professionals on topics ranging from spontaneous storytelling and puzzle design to handling difficult situations at the table.
In response, the organizers began crafting a structured way to answer these inquiries, which led to the founding of DMU. The debut workshop is scheduled for early January 2026 at an Atlanta campus.
“It's possible to view thousands of YouTube videos on any topic and learn quite a lot, but the concept was that there’s just no substitute face-to-face interaction alongside peers in game mastering, where real-time interaction with seasoned educators and your peers often in comparable situations and seek to enhance their abilities,” stated Jason Carl.
DMs can opt for tiers ranging from nearly a thousand dollars to two thousand five hundred dollars, based on the level of access they desire with the experts. The base tier includes one of four courses:
All workshops includes multiple sessions of training split over 48 hours.
“The courses are structured so that you walk away with immediate practical outcomes, enhanced belief in your abilities, and numerous applicable methods,” Carl explained. “These aren't simple talks and they’re not just static videos. These workshops that you can attend, absorb insights from, and then go right back home the following week and put into practice in your regular session.”
Many sessions are taught by a pair of experts. Setting design is guided by the founder of Monte Cook Games and Keith Baker, together instructing the skill of universe design.
Industry advancement features several experts, such as a puzzle design specialist, Clint McElroy, and a pioneering DM. The additional faculty is meant to provide specialized information to participants with particular aims.
“Some of them want to launch their own live gameplay show and display their adventures with the world, some of them plan to produce and create new material,” Carl explained. “Others simply wish to ask, How do I get to be a DM at something like an immersive experience? What capabilities that I need? Can anyone do it?”
A fifteen hundred dollar enhanced option includes access to a welcome reception, a welcome gift pack, and a half-hour consultation appointment with one of the faculty. This constitutes the first Dungeon Master Academy, though the company has previously run comparable workshops during breaks between game sessions at their castle events.
“You could almost run an full two days just on one-on-one meetings for career game masters,” Carl said. “It's unclear if that’s the optimal application of each attendee's hours – I believe the coursework and the practical exercises is highly beneficial – but I think it’s going to be one of the most popular parts of the program.”
The twenty-five hundred dollar platinum tier offers an 60-minute private session and the possibility to manage an adventure for a small group plus one of the faculty members, who will then provide notes and instruction.
“The aim is for the instructor to review any element is concerned with: I have difficulty with improvisation or I encounter obstacles in specific fight encounters. May I present a situation for you and obtain advice on where I excel and need improvement?” Carl explained. “Perhaps they want to get feedback and advice on a specific world that they’ve been building.”
Input from the first event will help determine future Dungeon Master University sessions. Carl said that possible changes could include adding more office hours, extending the program to three days, or experimenting with different seminar structures.
“I hope that we do this regularly,” Carl stated. “I truly hope to see numerous academy events in a given year, in different cities, and in different countries. The feedback has been really terrific. We’re very happy with current developments and I feel it would be amazing to be able to conduct this in partnership with large gatherings.”
