The war of words before the Ashes is escalating further, with former England paceman Broad declaring that the English side will confront "arguably the weakest Australian team in over a decade" during their tour this season.
Broad's assertion came as a reply to Warner – a long-time Ashes rival – predicting a 4-0 victory for the hosts. "If the captain [Pat Cummins] doesn’t play, they might win one game," Warner commented.
The Aussies remain undefeated in a men’s Ashes match on home soil after England's series win in the 2010-11 tour. Their 5-0 win in the following series – following seven losses in their previous nine Tests – came before 4-0 series victories in 2017-18 and 2021-22.
Yet, the top-ranked Test team, who have lost only one of their last thirteen series, approach the forthcoming contest with questions over the makeup of their batting lineup and the fitness of Pat Cummins, who is unlikely to feature in the first Test at Perth because of a back injury.
"It’s very, very difficult to triumph on Australian soil as an English team, or any visiting team," said Broad on his podcast. "Australia have to be massive favourites."
"Australia are under the greatest expectations because they’re anticipated to prevail, they’re formidable in home conditions, but they’ve got doubts over their squad and concerns over their skipper's condition. It's not unreasonable in believing – it’s actually not an opinion, it’s a fact – it’s probably the worst Australian team since 2010. Meanwhile, it's the strongest English team in over a decade. These factors point towards the fact that it’s going to be a brilliant Ashes series."
"Australia have been highly stable for a prolonged duration that it was clear who would open the batting, who was going to bat, what bowlers there were, and they don’t have that. It closely resembles a similar situation to 2010-11 when England went and won there. The fact of the matter is the Aussies typically need to underperform to be defeated at home and England must excel. The English have a solid opportunity of being very good and Australia have a decent chance of underperforming."
A major issue for England remains their selection at the number three position, with Pope and Jacob Bethell vying for the role. Cook, whose prolific scoring paved the way for the visitors' series victory 15 years ago, believes it would be "unusual" for Stokes' team to move away from Pope, who has been a regular at number three for the past three seasons.
"I'd select Pope at number three," said Cook. "I think it’s quite an easy decision. They have a player who has been involved in this preparation for several years. He has led the team, he has delivered remarkable performances for England and he’s a hundred-maker. He understands how to make big scores in first-class cricket. If they drop him now, I believe that changes the whole dynamic of what they’ve built up over the last few years."
Although praising Jacob Bethell as "an incredibly talented player", Cook said: "It would be a major risk [to pick him] because if that doesn’t work where do you move back to, a player you recently discarded? They have committed heavily in people like Ollie Pope and [Zak] Crawley that it would be such a strange thing to make a switch at this stage."
Pope has been replaced by Harry Brook as England’s vice-captain but, as per Cook, that will "take the pressure off" the Surrey batsman.
"They’ve been proactive on that, considering if there is an injury to Stokes, they’ve got a guy in Harry Brook who has taken the [captaincy of the] one-day side and it's evident that he seems to be a natural fit. This will relieve Pope. I don’t think undermine him. I’m sure it will have hurt him because whenever you're removed from a leadership role it wouldn’t be ideal, but I don’t think it diminishes his standing."
Cook will be in Australia as part of the broadcast team of the series, and will be accompanied by former Ashes champions Finn and Graeme Swann as on-the-ground pundits. The channel will offer a dedicated commentary stream but will operate a hybrid model, with commentators Eykyn and Hatch based remotely in the United Kingdom, while Cook, Finn and Swann deliver expert analysis from Australia. Ebony Rainford-Brent is also part of the commentary team working off-site, with the live presentation to be presented by Ives.
