Diplomatic talks involving US, Russian, and Ukrainian representatives commenced in the United Arab Emirates this week, marking the most recent step in efforts to broker a peace agreement to conclude the protracted war in the region.
American military official Dan Driscoll reportedly conferred with a Russian group on Monday night, with dialog proceeding into Tuesday.
“Discussions are progressing positively and we maintain hope. He is working in tight alignment with Washington as discussions unfold,” a spokesman commented.
The Ukrainian military intelligence chief, the head of military intelligence, was also expected to take part in the meetings, though the exact format was uncertain whether direct talks with Russian delegates would occur or if distinct one-on-one sessions would be conducted.
The composition of the Moscow delegation was unconfirmed. “I have nothing to say. We are following the media reports,” a Russian spokesperson told state media.
The current talks come after recent discussions in a European nation where US and Ukrainian officials modified a draft American proposal for ending the conflict.
Russia has not yet endorsed the latest version of the proposal and is unlikely to agree to many of the Kyiv changes.
Moscow’s foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, stated that any revised agreement must adhere to the “essence and wording” of what was agreed during previous summit talks between both nations.
EU leaders are reportedly struggling to remain involved in the process as American officials assume control.
Finland’s leader, a European figure, who has emerged as a key mediator between Washington and EU leaders, stated that the next few days would be critical in attempts to reach a resolution.
He allegedly held discussions with Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Nato representatives, stating that “Ukraine’s destiny must be determined by Ukrainians, and with European security falling under Europe’s purview.”
At the same time, the France’s leader, Emmanuel Macron, warned against a agreement that would represent a “concession” for Ukraine.
“The current proposal indicates what Moscow might find acceptable. However, must Kyiv and European nations consent to these terms? The answer is no,” he affirmed.
The US plan was reportedly made up of 28 points and was drawn from discussions between US and Moscow officials, with contributions from Ukrainian security authorities.
Key elements of the plan reportedly included:
American official allegedly went to Kyiv to update Zelenskyy on the proposal and demand quick approval.
This demand, combined with the leaking of the proposal, reportedly took by surprise Kyiv and EU officials.
The Ukrainian president stated that the nation was facing one of the most difficult periods in its history and was being forced to decide between “forfeiting self-respect or abandoning a crucial supporter.”
Subsequently, the US official briefed Nato representatives on the plan in Kyiv, with one attendee describing it as “a nightmare meeting” and stating that EU ambassadors were shocked by both the content and tone of the delivery.
The US administration later softened its stance, stating that the 28-point plan was an “initial basis for negotiation” rather than a definitive demand.
As peace efforts continue, Russian forces has maintained its regular strikes on Ukraine’s urban centers.
Moscow’s forces reportedly launched numerous of projectiles and many of unmanned aircraft at targets in and around the capital, according to Ukrainian reports.
The Ukrainian president stressed that Moscow must not believe it could prevail in the conflict while negotiations were underway.
“What matters most now is that all partners move toward diplomacy together, through joint efforts. Pressure on Russia must deliver results,” he affirmed.
The capital’s leader confirmed that seven people had been killed in the recent assault on the capital.
