In October of last year, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, evoking a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. In an era often marked by cynicism, this show's earnestness found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.
On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and supported its distinctly quirky style.
"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about observing this charming family go about their simple existence.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing cynical streak. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to experience the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
